"When are you chatting with Haim?" a text reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several celebrated admirers have publicly begged for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"So all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.

However Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
