Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
